In Search of Fortune: Long Boi Victory and Shadowlands Goals

Ignore the big dip

Welcome to ‘In Search of Fortune’, a new monthly series where I discuss my gold goals and in-game money making strategies.

In my first In Search of Fortune post, I declared my goal to get the bruto mount before the prepatch hit. At the time, the true date was unknown and I expected to need to fulfill the 500k quota (I had 4.5m) in about 10 days from the time of the post. The picture above is a big ol’ spoiler regarding that quest. I managed to average ~75k profit per day for that week and finished a couple of days before (what I believed) was the last day. Of course, pre-patch got pushed back weeks more and I’d have had plenty of time to get the 500k. However, I was still pretty happy with getting it done then. For the rest of this post, I’ll go over my gold goals for Shadowlands. This will be something you can come back in a year or two and yell at me if I didn’t get it done. Make sure to subscribe or bookmark or whatever so you can do that then.

One Last Note About the Long Boi Grind

In my recent post regarding Opportunity Cost, I describe the importance of considering what you’re not getting or doing with your money or time. I make ~20k per day with a fairly low time investment of 15-30 minutes. I can maybe double that with a similar increase in time. However, to hit 75k per day, I had to add some raw gold farming and material farming. Not only does this take time, but it isn’t as “afk” as auction scans and posts. I essentially didn’t play the game during that week outside of earning the gold. Just something to consider. For me, for one week, it was worth to ensure I got the mount before it was gone… but, I wouldn’t spend that much time at it normally.

Shadowlands Goals

  • Gold Cap: I’ve never reached it before, given that I was able to make 5 million in about a year without going very hard or very focused, it should be reachable.
  • Server transfer all of my (12) characters: I say all, but several are going to get leveled fresh as they don’t have any particular history or valuable professions on them. A friend has really been wanting me to go join his guild, so… after much deliberating, this is on the agenda. I’ve made enough gold since buying the bruto to bring over 4, so far.
  • Buy all of the mounts: This excludes anything bruto-cost or similar, if it gets introduced. But all of the rep and vendor mounts in Shadowlands… I want them. At least all of the sub 100k cost ones.
  • Buy, with gold, any Blizzard games: If D4 comes out, I’m going to use WoW to buy it. Not sure what else might happen that I’d be interested in over the next couple of years, though.

How Much is All of This?

By the time Shadowlands launches, I should have made enough to move over 5 characters. I’m going to level 2 if not 3, so we’ll assume that I have 4 more to bring. Current token price is 145k (this will vary, but we’ll use this price). Transfers are $25 each x4 = $100 / $15 per token rounds up to 7 tokens x 145k is about 1 million. Gold cap is 10 million. Vendor mounts, well, I’m not sure. If we figure each covenant and maybe a half dozen reps over the expansion and they all have 100k worth of mounts (I have no idea, ballparking), then we’re looking at another million. D4 will cost 4 tokens, so another ~600k. All in total, I’ll need to earn 12.6 million gold over the expansion. Let’s see how I do. Check back each month for updates, what I’m doing to earn it, and tips for what you can do to make more gold.
